Five players and five officials added to Sandringham’s hall of fame
CHAMPION players, a premiership coach and distinguished administrators have been added to Sandringham’s hall of fame.
Former captains Chad Liddell, Nick Sautner and David MacGeorge, ruckman Des Kennedy, player and coach Mark Williams, and officials John Mennie, John Kempf, Gary Gilchrist, David Burgin and Jim Bisset were honoured at a function at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday night.
About 150 guests attended, including JJ Liston Trophy champions Keith Burns and Justin Crough and premiership coaches Bob Keddie and Andy Collins.
The inductees were acknowledged for their “outstanding service and overall contribution’’ to Sandringham.
They joined Neil Bencraft, Dennis Oakley, Anthony Allen, Fred Webster, Darrell MacKenzie, Bob Murray and Len Toyne in the hall of fame.
In another highlight the club revealed the numbers allotted to every player who has appeared at senior level in its 85 years.
Historian Wal Williams has identified more than 1300 players, giving the number one position to James McCashney.
Sandringham 2014 Hall of Fame inductees:
Des Kennedy: ruckman who played 101 games from 1960-64 and 1971-75, winning the 1963 and 1973 best and fairests and figuring in the 1962 flag. Also won three best and fairests at Under 19 level and coached the reserves in 1976.
Nick Sautner: the champion spearhead made a club-record 202 appearances from 1997-2000 and 2004-10, booting a Sandringham-high 621 goals and featuring in the 1997, 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006 premierships. Topped Sandy’s goalkicking nine times, was captain in 2010 and represented the VFL on three occasions.
Mark Williams: played 29 games from 1992-93 and returned to coach the Zebras to the 2004-05-06 premierships. “Wilbur’’, now an assistant coach at Richmond, also steered the state side in 2005 and 2007.
David MacGeorge: inspirational midfielder who played 136 games from 1992-2001 and was captain of the 2000 premiership team. Also played in the winning 1994 and 1997 grand final teams. Won bests and fairests in 1995, 1997 and 2001, captained the VFL team in 2001 and was selected in Sandy’s team of the century.
Chad Liddell: powerful left footer who played 168 games from 1999-2008 and in the 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006 premierships. Won the 2002 best and fairest and was captain from 2004-07.
John Mennie: has been general manager since 1994, having previously served as president from 1982-86 and treasurer from 1987-1993. Received club life membership in 1991 and VFL life membership in 2011.
John Kempf: played at Under 19 level in 1953 but has made a towering contribution off the field. Was treasurer from 1994-2010, best clubman in 2002 and received the VFL’s Alec Gillon Award in 2011.
David Burgin: served on the committee from 1978-1989, was vice-president from 1990-2001 and has been vice-captain since 2004. Twice named best clubman and was honoured with the Commonwealth Australian Sports Medal.
Jim Bisset: captained the Under 19s in 1954 and was president from 1968-75 and 1987. Received a special service award in 1964 and is a Sandringham life member.
Gary Gilchrist: his reign as president from 1998-2006 took in four premierships. The VFL’s champion club trophy is named after Gilchrist, whose death in 2006 at age 53 numbed everyone associated with Sandringham.
